TRACTOR MAINTENANCE: PRE-SEASON CHECKS YOU MUST DO

A tractor breaking down during planting or harvest season means both time and money lost. Regular pre-season maintenance can minimise this risk. Here are the essential maintenance steps every farmer should carry out at the start of the season:

Engine Oil and Filter Change

Engine oil directly affects the life of the engine. Change the oil and filter at the intervals recommended by the manufacturer. Old, dirty oil accelerates engine wear. Always start the season with fresh oil and a new filter.

Air Filter Check

Tractors working in agricultural environments are exposed to heavy dust and dirt. A clogged air filter reduces engine performance and increases fuel consumption. Remove the filter and inspect it; clean it with compressed air or replace it if necessary.

Fuel System

Water and sediment accumulated in the fuel tank can damage injectors. Replace the fuel filter and drain any water from the tank drain valve. Check fuel lines for leaks.

Cooling System

Check the radiator coolant. Make sure the antifreeze concentration is adequate. Clean the radiator core with pressurised water. Replace any cracked or leaking hoses. Overheating causes severe engine damage.

Hydraulic System Maintenance

Check the hydraulic oil level and top up if needed. Replace hydraulic filters. Inspect cylinders and hose connections for leaks. Sluggish movement or settling indicates low oil or a dirty filter.

Tyre Check

Adjust tyre pressures to the manufacturer's specified values. Low pressure increases fuel consumption and wears tyres faster. Check tread depth — insufficient tread causes poor grip in field conditions.

Battery Maintenance

Clean the battery terminals and apply petroleum jelly. Check the water level in serviceable batteries. Measure the charge level. A weak battery can leave you stranded in the middle of a field.

Brake System

Inspect brake pads and discs. Check the brake fluid level. Make sure the brakes hold evenly — uneven braking is a safety hazard.

Belts and Hoses

Check the tension and condition of V-belts. Cracked or loose belts affect the fan, alternator, and water pump. Inspect all hose connections for tightness and cracks.

General Lubrication

Grease all grease nipples. Rotating joint points, the steering system, PTO shaft, and lift arms all require regular lubrication. Components running without lubrication wear rapidly.
